Jobs offshore oil rig: No experience - how do I start?

You can get hired as a roustabout, basically a general laborer, work hard for 6 months and climb the ladder to the position of roughneck. A university degree is not very useful on board an oil platform. Because of dangers of offshore jobs, there are legislative regulations and rules of current destinations. For example in the UK, you must follow a course of survival and struggle against fires off. Several Canadian provinces have their own first aid certificates. And different states have their own requirements.

Employees often work in Alaska, the Arctic region, Canada and the Middle East (Qatar, Iraq, Iran). If you started with a university degree related qualifications 2-5 years, you would be in very good position. Many of the staff of the oil company were here since in the 1970s and 1980s, some of them called out of retirement. If you start today, you will get your degree in 3-5 years.
